On the occasion of the release of National Geographic’s DEEPSEA CHALLENGE 3D film about the expedition to the deepest reaches of the ocean by explorer and film-maker James Cameron (Titanic, Avatar), Rolex has introduced a new version of its Rolex Deepsea. This ultimate divers’ watch, resistant to extreme pressure, is equipped with a “D-blue” dial representing the colours of the deep.
The deep blue to pitch-black gradient dial is reminiscent of the ocean’s twilight zone where the last trickle of light from the surface disappears into the abyss, echoing James Cameron’s DEEPSEA CHALLENGE expedition. As a tribute to the partnership between Rolex and Cameron, the “DEEPSEA” marking on the new dial adopts the colour of the explorer’s green submersible as it is perceived underwater.
The new Rolex Deepsea was introduced on Monday 4 August in New York, during the US premiere of the documentary film in the splendid Hall of Ocean Life at the American Museum of Natural History.
The new Rolex Deepsea with D-Blue dial will be available in our store from September.
On 2 July 1908, Hans Wilsdorf officially filed and registered “ROLEX” as a brand name in Switzerland – a master stroke that would shape the company’s future.
A veritable visionary, Hans Wilsdorf was truly ahead of his time in terms of intel- lectual property. After having protected the name, Hans Wilsdorf had another challenge before him: to convince the retailers to include “ROLEX” rather than their own name on the watch.
At the time, each jeweller or watchmaker wanted to place his own name on the dial and not reveal the name of the supplier or manufacturer. Hans Wilsdorf proceeded a step at a time, as related in his memoirs. “At first I ventured to inscribe ‘ROLEX’ on one watch in every six, hoping that this watch would get through and be sold. Gradually, I dared to put it on two out of six, and later it appeared on three.”
In 1926, the year of the launch of the Rolex Oyster waterproof wristwatch, Hans Wilsdorf vowed that, from that date forth, no single watch would be delivered without the “ROLEX” brand name figuring on its dial, case and movement.
There was no turning back.
On 4 June we visited the opening of exceptional exhibition “Croatia From Above”. This is one of the greatest and most original photography projects ever in Croatia and is of a great value for Croatian promotion.
Over the course of seven years, the photographer and the founder of this project, Davor Rostuhar, created a collection of 200 unique photographs of Croatia from above, showing various natural and cultural attractions. Moreover, he discovered new values of natural and cultural heritage of Croatia.
As the result, National Geographic’s editors in the United States have recognized Rostuhar’s approach in photography by awarding him the magazine’s prestigious editor’s award.
